Elder Abuse

ELDER ABUSE.....the hidden crime!

Any action by a friend family member, neighbor or caregiver which hurts a Senior is called Elder Abuse. People often do not see the abuse and neglect of older adults. Or they fail to report it to the police. Physical evidence of Elder abuse is often missed because it is mistaken for symptoms of other medical conditions. Many older adults also believe that abuse by a relative is a "family problem" and are ashamed to tell someone that a family member is being abusive or neglectful.

Some signs of Elder Abuse are:

  • depression, fear, anxiety or passivity
  • unexplained physical injuries
  • dehydration or lack of food
  • poor hygiene, urine sores or bed sores
  • over-sedation
  • unexplained withdrawals from bank accounts

Older Adults' Bill of Rights

  • Have the basic requirements of life, such as food, clothing and shelter
  • Live free from physical, emotional, financial, sexual and medication abuse, violation of civil/human rights, and neglect
  • To be informed about their civil and legal rights
  • Self-determination
  • Live their lives as they wish, provided they do not infringe upon the rights and safety of others
  • Participate in making decisions about themselves, to the full extent that they are able to do so
  • Refuse assistance and intervention
